The Effects of Watching TV

Watching television is one of the most popular pastimes in the world. Almost all children do so; some even take the liberty of slipping out of bed unnoticed at night just to watch a show that they like. However, what most people do not realize is that television can ruin your eyesight, cause lack of concentration and can also inculcate many bad habits, especially in young ones. Most shows shown on the television nowadays involve bright color. According to the media, the brighter the picture, the better it is. But doctors feel the contrary. Almost all the latest movies and cartoons shown on television use a variety of special effects. Most of these involve explosions and gun fights (in the case of movies) and flashes of lightning and
This is caused as a result of the combination of visual and auditory media which alert most of the senses of the viewer. Lastly, television is one of the main reasons for bad behavior seen in children, especially teenagers. These sudden and intermittent flashes of light are capable of causing serious damage to the eye and can cause temporary blindness and migraine if a person watches television excessively. It allows viewers to immerse themselves in the images shown on screen and imagine being in another world, all in the comfort of their own homes. bursts of color at times of animated violence (in the case of cartoons). This is especially seen in the case of people who normally study in the close vicinity of an operational television set. Therefore, they adopt bad habits and may not be able to control themselves in the future due to their continued exposure to the violence and verbal abuse seen on television. These senses are heightened to a great extent as a result of which perception of sounds improves. Another very common problem noticed in people who watch too much of television is their lack of concentration. However, this poses as a disadvantage as even the smallest of noises or disturbances can divert one’s attention from the task at hand. This ‘macho’ image appeals to young children who aim to be like them and as a result, start imitating them, from the way they talk, to the way they look and behave. This can cause lots of other added problems; restlessness and sleeplessness primarily. Movies like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon display their actors slinging rifles over their shoulders, smoking cigarettes and swearing often, just to make them look ‘macho’. This was the case with the recent popular Japanese cartoon show, Pokemon, where certain animals with special powers emitted balls of lightning or fire when prompted; many children suffered from headaches as a result of watching the show and complaints are still being issued against the show for the same reason. However, its reputation has been tainted as a result of its disadvantages but with good parental supervision and guidance, such undesirable situations can be avoided.

Brain Foods
What Foods Help You Learn Better?
Do you want to supercharge your brain? There are certain foods you can eat and nutritional habits you can develop that may help your brain work better.
Go Fish
It appears that fish may be one of the best brain foods around. Fish have high levels of both choline and omega-3 fatty acids. Both substances are linked to brain functionality. Choline, a B-vitamin, has received a lot of attention lately because of its positive effect on the brain’s memory center, the hippocampus. In one experiment, rat pups given choline either in the womb or within a few weeks of being born displayed a significant change in brain function, resulting in lifelong memory enhancement. In another experiment, pregnant mothers were given either cod liver oil or corn oil throughout their pregnancies. Cod liver oil contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, and corn oil does not. The children of these mothers were given an IQ test at the age of 4, and the offspring of the mothers who were given cod liver oil scored significantly better than the corn oil group. Tests using choline with pregnant mothers produced similar results.
Lose the Carbs and Gain Your Focus
If you want your brain to work at a high level for longer periods of time, you’re going to have to watch your carbohydrate intake. Carbs are an essential part of nutrition, but most of us eat more than we need. When given an overdose of carbs, our bodies essentially shut down, making us sleepy. It’s hard to concentrate in this state, meaning that your post pizza pig-out study sessions might not be that effective. Balancing protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake makes the body work most efficiently. Fruit and vegetables are actually carbohydrates, but are not nearly as dense as breads and pastas. Eating more fruits and vegetables and decreasing your intake of dense breads and pastas should help you focus for longer periods of time.
Caffeine — Friend or Foe?
And yes, any story on brain food should discuss the double-edged sword otherwise known as caffeine. As most people know, caffeine is a stimulant and is found in coffee, chocolate, and many carbonated beverages. Because of its stimulating effect, it can help you become more alert and thus able to process information more smoothly and quickly. Unfortunately, caffeine is addictive, meaning that over long periods of caffeine intake, your brain may develop a “need” for the drug in order to wake up. At this point, the ability for your brain to function well without caffeine is hindered.
In general, sticking with foods high in choline and omega-3 fatty acids, and limiting your intake of dense carbs should help you become more alert and make learning easier for you. Use caffeine sparingly for a temporary boost, but don’t make it a habit.
Obviously I took this info from a web site but its always good for me to go over things to help remind me that God gave us these bodies and minds to take care of and to properly stewart our kids health. Maybe what sparked this little research was Paul’s words to timothy his young disciple saying to him. 5 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.2timothy 2:15
The other thing that came to my mind was the benefit of knowing God through the holy spirit. For all you parents out there who have kids that struggle with learning, praying for your kids that God will save them is a huge advantage also to their learning ability. Obviously you need to physically sit down and read with your kids but the Holy Spirit promise is one promise that you shouldn’t pass up. Go to bible gateway.com and look up the word holy spirit, you will be surprised on what God is going to do for you.
